Why an old hot tub is hard to get rid of

A full-size hot tub is one of the heaviest things in a backyard, and most of that weight is in a shell built to hold tons of water. It will not fit through a standard gate on its side, it cannot go out with the household trash, and a few people with a dolly will not get it to the street. That is why most hot tub removals involve cutting the tub into sections, carrying them out and hauling everything away.

Before we come out

• Shut off the power at the breaker, and have an electrician disconnect a hardwired tub.
• Drain it. Use the drain valve or a pump the day before so the tub is empty and dry enough to move.
• Clear the path. Move patio furniture and grills out of the way, and unlock the gate.
• Send photos of the tub, the cover, the steps and the path from the tub to the driveway, plus the width of the gate.

4. We take it out. The tub is cut down if needed, carried out, loaded and hauled away with the cover and steps.
